What We Do

What We Do

We use the law to protect marginalized communities facing discrimination and exclusion.

Our Approach

Our mission to promote the rule of law and protect human rights in Nigeria is a collective endeavour, involving partnerships with local and international organizations as well as activists from around the world. Through legal representation, legal research, legal advocacy, strategic litigation, public interest litigation and stakeholder engagement, we strive to achieve our objectives.

Our work is guided by the unique needs of every person made vulnerable by discriminatory laws and policies in Nigeria. Their needs serve as our compass, ensuring that our legal interventions remain relevant and responsive to both the individual victims we represent and the broader communities we serve.

We currently take up important legal challenges like:

  • Strategic case selection and impact litigation
  • Early-stage legal intervention
  • Ensuring justice through trial monitoring
  • Fundamental rights enforcement
  • HIV related rights litigation
  • SRHR-focused legal advocacy
  • Legal empowerment and capacity building

Rule of Law

Minority Watch advances the rule of law as the cornerstone of a just, democratic, and inclusive society. We believe that the legitimacy of any legal system is measured not merely by the existence of laws, but by the extent to which those laws are applied fairly, constrain the abuse of power, and protect the rights and freedoms of all persons.

Through strategic litigation, legal advocacy, research, and public engagement, we work to strengthen constitutional governance, promote institutional accountability, and ensure that public authorities remain subject to the law. Our vision is of a society in which justice is not a privilege enjoyed by the powerful, but a guarantee available to all.

LGBTQI Rights

Minority Watch is committed to protecting the rights of LGBTQI persons in Nigeria. We challenge legal, social, and institutional barriers that perpetuate discrimination, exclusion, and violence, while working to expand the scope of legal protections available to sexual and gender minorities.

Through litigation, advocacy, public education, and coalition-building, we seek to contribute to the development of a society in which every individual is able to live authentically and participate fully in public life without fear of persecution or discrimination on the basis of their real or perceived sexual orientation and/or gender identity. Our work is informed by the conviction that human rights are universal, indivisible, and incapable of selective application.

Access to Justice

For many individuals and communities, the promise of justice remains beyond reach. Minority Watch works to bridge the gap between legal rights and their practical realization by ensuring that vulnerable and marginalized persons can access effective remedies when their rights are violated.

We provide legal representation, legal assistance, and institutional support to those who would otherwise be excluded from the justice system. At the same time, we pursue reforms aimed at addressing the structural inequalities that limit access to justice. We envision a legal system that serves not merely as a forum for dispute resolution, but as a powerful instrument for social inclusion, accountability, and the protection of human dignity.

Strategic Litigation

Minority Watch views the law as one of the most powerful tools for social transformation. Through strategic litigation, we seek not only to secure justice for individual clients but also to shape jurisprudence, influence public policy, and advance systemic reforms that strengthen the protection of human rights.

We identify and pursue cases capable of producing lasting legal and social impact, particularly those that challenge discriminatory practices, clarify constitutional principles, and expand access to justice. Our litigation strategy is guided by the belief that landmark judgments have the capacity to redefine social norms, strengthen democratic institutions, and improve the lives of countless people beyond the immediate parties before the court.

Human Rights Education

The enduring protection of human rights depends upon an informed and engaged society. Minority Watch invests in human rights education as a means of empowering individuals, strengthening communities, and fostering a culture of accountability.

Through training programmes, public awareness initiatives, legal literacy campaigns, and thought leadership, we seek to deepen public understanding of constitutional rights, democratic values, and the rule of law. We believe that knowledge is a powerful catalyst for social change and that citizens who understand their rights are better equipped to defend them and to hold institutions accountable.

Women's Rights and Gender Justice

Minority Watch works to advance gender justice by addressing the legal, institutional, and social barriers that impede the full realization of the rights of women and girls. We advocate for legal reforms, pursue strategic litigation, and support initiatives that promote equality, bodily autonomy, economic empowerment, and freedom from violence and discrimination.

Our approach recognizes that the advancement of women’s rights is central to the realization of human rights, democratic development, and social progress. We are committed to building a future in which women and girls are able to exercise their rights fully and participate equally in every sphere of society.

HIV and Anti-Discrimination Advocacy

Minority Watch promotes a rights-based response to HIV stigmatization grounded in dignity, equality, and justice. We work to eliminate the stigma and discrimination that continue to undermine the wellbeing, opportunities, and fundamental rights of people living with HIV.

Through legal representation, strategic litigation, policy advocacy, and public education, we challenge existing discriminatory practices and attitudes while advancing stronger legal protections for affected communities. We believe that the fight against HIV stigmatization cannot be separated from the broader struggle for human rights and that sustainable progress requires both effective public health interventions and robust legal safeguards against discrimination.

Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights

Minority Watch advances sexual and reproductive health and rights as fundamental components of human dignity, equality, public health, and personal autonomy. We engage in strategic litigation, legal advocacy, research, and policy reform aimed at expanding access to rights-based healthcare and removing legal and institutional barriers that prevent individuals from exercising their reproductive rights.

Our work is particularly focused on protecting vulnerable populations, strengthening accountability within health systems, and promoting legal frameworks that respect the interconnected rights to health, privacy, equality, and access to justice. We envision a society in which all persons are empowered to make informed decisions about their bodies and lives without coercion, discrimination, or fear.
